Shakespeare Returns to the Stage.......
Shakespeare will be returning to the Gonzales Crystal Theater this summer to commemorate the 400th anniversary of his death, celebrate the 46th year of his plays at Winedale, and the sixth summer in Gonzales. Young actors from around the world who are part of Camp Shakespeare will open the season with performances of The Tempest and close with The Taming of the Shrew. Both performances are Free to the public as the Gonzales Crystal theater aims engage audiences of all ages, backgrounds and theater experience to the magic and mystery of Shakespeare.
The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s last plays—known as romances for their worlds of wonder, magic, spectacle, strange creatures and events—and one which many have viewed as autobiographical, hearing in it the playwright’s farewell to the stage. Victoria Borgstedte of La Grange will take the role of Prospero in The Tempest.
The Camp Shakespeareans will perform The Tempest at the Crystal Theater in Gonzales, Texas, on Thursday afternoon, June 23, at 3:00 p.m.
In mid-July, an entirely new group of performers will deliver Shakespeare’s lively, raucous, and controversial tale of “mad” Petruchio’s attempt to tame the “wild Kate,” in The Taming of the Shrew, a robust and often farcical comedy of disguises in the pursuit of love.
Gonzales’ own Daniel Garcia, a four-year Crystal Theater Ninja, will perform with youth from across the nation on his own home stage in the debut performances of The Taming of the Shrew scheduled for Thursday, July 14, 3:00 p.m., at the Crystal Theater in Gonzales.
He will perform Friday, July 15, 7:00 p.m., “in-the-round” at Round Top’s Henkel Hall; and Saturday, July 16, 1:00 p.m., at the Winedale Theater Barn.
Attending Camp Shakespeare this 14th summer are young people ages 11-16 from Los Angeles, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, Mineola, Dripping Springs, Cedar Park, Decatur, LaGrange and Round Top. The two in-residence camp sessions are based at Briarfield B & B near Round Top, Tx, and use for daily work and play venues in Winedale, Round Top and La Grange.
